Tonight we will be spending our third night on our series on the gospel! The first week we learned that God is perfect Himself, and that He requires perfection from us. Last week we looked at ourselves, mankind, before God. We were created sinless, mankind sinned, sin entered the world, and now all of mankind is sinful and, in turn, deserving of the holy wrath of God. Tonight we will look at Christ and His life, death, and resurrection.
To know what the gospel is, we must understand that Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice that came to earth to take away the sin of the world. John 1:29 puts it simply- “Behold , the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” Christ is fully God, and yet He came to earth- taking on flesh- lived sinlessly, suffered wrongfully, died injustly and rose from the dead miraculously.
The question can be raised: If God is all powerful- why did Christ die? Was mankind too clever or powerful? Did they overrun Him? In Matthew 26:51-53 we find the scene of Jesus’ arrest in Gethsemane. When the mob comes to arrest Jesus, Peter draws a sword and attempts to fight them off. Jesus told Peter to put away his sword, for if they were to fight God could send down the angels to fight on their behalf. Christ didn’t die because of the cleverness or might of man. Christ died to complete the will of the Father and to pay the price of sin that man could not, so that sinful mankind could be made restored and brought back into relationship with God.
This is the gospel of our glorious savior. That the God who created us died for us in order to pay the price of sin that we committed, so that we could be saved and be in relationship with Him. Our actions left us condemned, and through the work of Christ we can stand before God as forgiven. Not by works, or by good deeds, or by our own holiness, but only through faith in our righteous and glorious savior.
See you tonight!
In Christ,
Johnny
